Revealed: Recent U.S.-Iran nuclear talks involved key officials –(UPDATED)

EXCERPTED: Over the past year, our [ForeignPolicy.com] sources confirmed, former Defense Secretary William Perry and a group of high-level U.S. nuclear nonproliferation specialists and U.S. experts on Iran held a series of meetings in European cities with Iranian officials under the auspices of the Pugwash group. (Pugwash, a group founded in 1957 by an international group of scientists, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 for advocating for the elimination of nuclear weapons.) What’s interesting about this is, is that when we were negotiating it back under President Clinton in the 1990s, the deal that was on the table was all of the Golan to go back to Syria -- the Golan Heights -- and Israel would get peace and normalization of relations in return, plus security arrangements...

The deal of territory for peace that we were negotiating was never that attractive to the Israeli public. Five prime ministers were prepared to withdraw from the Golan. They were always looking over their shoulder, whether the public was going to be behind them. And the reason the public wasn’t sure about it -- they liked the Golan Heights. The interview produced a scoop which, for some reason, has not been widely publicized: Hamas has endorsed Barack Obama for President. Yousef said, "We like Mr. Obama and we hope he will win the election." Why? "He has a vision to change America." Maybe Yousef has some insight into what Obama means by all these vague references to "change."

Of course, Hamas's taste in American presidents is suspect. Yousef also described Jimmy Carter, who was about to pay a call on Hamas when the interview was taped, as "this noble man" who "did an excellent job as President."

Yousef was asked about Obama's condemnation of Carter's visit with Hamas, but didn't seem troubled by it. Nevertheless, he hopes that the Democrats will change American policies when they take office.

As my FOX News team left the United States for our ninth embedment with U.S. combat troops in Iraq, the headlines were all about the resurrected "Mideast peace process." European papers touted the conference in Annapolis, Md., as a "long overdue breakthrough" because Syria attended. Buried deep in all these stories is the observation that Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas all have condemned the conference and its goals.

It's doubtful that radical Islamists such as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran, Hezbollah's Sheik Hassan Nasrallah or Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh ever will accept Israel's existence or Western-style secular, consensual government in the Middle East. That, however, doesn't mean their followers can't be persuaded otherwise...
